Introduction

Established in 1998, the Department of Visual Communication Design is the first visual design department in southern Taiwan. In coordination with the transitions in the government's industry policies, the goal of the department is to cultivate designers for graphic design, multimedia design, cultural product design and package design.

 

Objective

The development of the department focuses on the cultural creativity product industry, brand and visual media, multimedia and technology, and artistic perspectives and creativity industries in Taiwan. The department emphasizes the areas of graphic design, multimedia design, cultural product design and package design, in order to train design professionals who are knowledgeable and skilled to undertake challenges in the design industries.

 

Prospects for graduates

Channels for Employment:

There are differences with regard to the kinds of employment prospects due to the specialized courses that students take. For example, the required basic and applied courses qualify students for employment in areas such as: advertisement design, editing design, packing design, display design and multi-media design. Graduates can even become kindergarten, elementary, and high school teachers after completing required education courses and obtaining a teaching certificate.

Channels for Further Study:

Graduates can apply for research degree in the Graduate Institute of Applied Arts & Design at Shu-Te University or study abroad.

 

Graduate School

The Graduate School of Visual Communication Design, an on-the-job Master's program, was established in 2011 to correspond to the needs of digital content and cultural innovative industries which are key projects of our nation's construction. The aims are to train advanced design professionals in practice and to further provide educational opportunities for those who intend to be advanced professionals of visual communication design in southern Taiwan. The areas focused on are an integration of cultural innovative industries, visual communication design, visual and public art, multi-media and picture book design, commercial advertising and packaging design, designer management, etc., in order to meet the developmental needs of culturally innovative industries, enterprises and local brand identity, and digital industries. This program features courses in “local cultures and creative industries, brand image and visual media, visual media and technology,” and forms “aesthetics and creativity.” With the curricula and implementation of our elite training program, students' expertise will be compatible with the future job market and also with the needs of visually and culturally innovative industries.

Course Information

The curriculum  is further divided into seven areas, which put equal emphasis on theory and  practice. In addition to the foundational courses for basic skills, students  can choose specialized courses based on their own interests. The curriculum covers  the following areas:

  • Basic courses include  composition, typography, editing design, drawing, and printing.
  • Digital and  multi-media communication courses include digital media, 3D graphics, CG  animation, video production, screenplay, basic photography, multimedia project,  interactive media production, and website design.
  • Advanced  courses include marketing, advertising, media application, advertising  practicum, display design, package design, package construction design, icon  design, applied painting, illustration, book design, picture book design and  advanced photography.
  • Design  theoretical courses include introduction of visual communication design, design  method, design history, thought in modern design, cultural and artistic  perspectives in history, cultural economics and so forth.
  • Artistic  courses include Western modern art, visual  art and environmental design.
  • General  comprehensive courses include POP design, professional English, international English, design studio and research methods and  thesis writing.
  • Humanity  courses include seminar on affective liberal education and so on.
